Egg Drop, Nature's Joys, and a Penguin Mug {April 26-May 2}

Carissa and I have been nearing school deadlines, so we've been very busy this week trying to finish up ceramics for grading.  I will still have clay to make the remainder of the items I want, but I've got to finish up what is necessary.

Here are some of our last week's memories:

Tradescantia virginiana—I always enjoy the lovely spiderwort.

Verbascum thapsus—This mullein growing right there looks so neat!

Podophyllum peltatum (mayapple)

I think Tremella aurantia—beautiful!

Lonicera sempervirens—Our red honeysuckle is spreading so nicely!  I must take some with us when we move.

Elizabeth's teacher invited students to participate in an egg drop, since they'd have done that in school.  We listened to a book on Youtube about what happened to Humpty Dumpty after his fall.  He was put together, and then he sought to prevent cracking again.  After we finished the story, I asked Elizabeth whether she could think of a way to prevent an egg from busting or cracking if it fell from six feet.  She suggested socks because they are "soft."

The next day we tried out three layers with two socks:

Note: These do not play here.  I have them unlisted on Youtube, available upon request.

I suggested we use some foam we had from a package, before we added more socks.  She brought several old socks.

We tried again:

Then debriefed:

Trusten asked to use some of the black plastic we had lying around so he could set up slickway.  I cautioned that it wasn't really a good idea, having the vague memory of it going wrong in the past, but he did, anyway, and every single one of them has hurt knees now, due to the rocks.  Rocks are everywhere here, you know.

I finished Jade's mug with a penguin handle.  I'll post Elizabeth's mug in my next post.  That will conclude the kids' mugs.  I have some more to make for a couple friends, and I'd like to try to make one for myself, and I'll have more left, and I'm trying to determine what to make for each of my parents and my sister, maybe for others, depending on what I have left.  I almost forgot about myself.  Lol, it'll be fine, though, because I'll have my coil pot for my future class room and my teapot.

Elizabeth helped with washing the dishes for the first time. I let her do the rinsing.  At first, she started wailing and saying she couldn't do it, typical of Elizabeth.  Then, not far into it, she was happily smiling and proclaiming that it was fun and that she wanted to always help me with the dishes, that she loved helping me. That is also typical of Elizabeth. No matter what it is, she initially thinks she can't do it, no matter how much I tell her she can and encourage her to be confident.  But once she starts doing it, usually it works out fine.

This and That: Our Delights the Week of April 19-25

We enjoyed life in various ways during this particular week.  This entry is quick-captioned.

Carissa fried up homemade tortilla chips.

Liv drew and colored me a lovely picture.

Lizi, Carissa, and I wandered the creek after taking this picture.

Within this elevated tree root in the creek, I "weeded" myself a little garden and decorated it with pretty rocks.

I worked on making another mug, this one with a penguin handle for Jade.

Jaden's graduation party invitations I made came in, and I was able to mail them.  I'll post pictures soon!

Until next time...
